Why You Shouldn’t Listen to the “Church AI Experts”
By Jon-Michael Sherman
When it comes to AI and the church, suddenly a few unknown people jumped into church conference breakout session circuit as self appointed experts. Where did they come from? This just started 2 years ago, and already we have "experts?" LOL.
Here’s the truth: you should be very careful about whose advice you trust. Especially when it comes to using AI for something as important as preaching.
Here’s why you shouldn’t blindly follow the so-called "Church AI Experts":
1. They’re Self-Appointed
Nobody asked them to be the gatekeepers of AI to the church. These "experts" often crown themselves authorities without ever earning real credibility. They immediately started creating AI and ethics manuals for churches without even understanding the tools and how they would evolve. Most of them do not have a track record of pastoring or building healthy churches... just an opinion, blog, email list, webinar and a breakout session at Exponential Conference. LOL.
2. They Have a Very Low View of Pastors (You)
Instead of understanding the possibilities, they jumped straight to policing it. Their first instinct wasn't exploration, it was writing rules. Why? Because they have a very low view of you and a high view of themselves. They think you will plagiarize, be totally lazy, and neglect study. Its both ridiculous and offensive.
3. Many of them Don’t Preach or Write Sermons
It’s amazing how many loudest voices don't actually live in the world they’re commenting on. They aren't crafting sermons week in and week out. They don’t feel the pressure of bringing fresh, biblically sound messages to their congregation every Sunday. Their downloadable PDF advice is disconnected from the real-world demands of ministry.
4. They Don’t Actually Know More Than You Do About AI
Here's the big secret about Church AI Experts: they are reading and watching the same content about AI innovations that you are reading and watching. This is new to everyone. And it is changing rapidly. If you take time to learn something new each week, you are well informed.
5. Some Care More About Profit Than Mission
Let’s be real: not everyone waving the “Christian AI” banner is in it for the right reasons. Some of these experts are aligned with Chinese AI companies and platforms — prioritizing profitability over national security and long-term Kingdom impact. You deserve tools built with your mission, not their margins, in mind.
